Chapter 4 in Research Handbook on Group Decision Making, 2026, pp 51-77 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Groups and teams are often formed to address complex, multifaceted tasks. However, some tasks are better addressed by collections of teams working together. These collections of teams have been dubbed multiteam systems (MTSs; Mathieu et al., 2001). MTSs are found in a wide array of domains, and research on MTSs has considered to grow since the term was coined. After providing an overview of MTSs, ways they differ from groups and teams as traditionally defined, and existing typologies of MTS, we focus on inter-team affective states, cognitions, and behaviors important for MTS performance and effectiveness, as well as contextual features that might impact the relevance of and ease or difficulty of achieving those states. Based on this review, we then offer suggestions for supporting success in MTS and directions for future research.
