 The critical role of psychological safety in team decision makingPetra H. Momcilovic and Tiffany Bisbey Chapter 5 in Research Handbook on Group Decision Making, 2026, pp 78-95 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: This chapter examines the critical role of psychological safety in team decision making. Drawing on insights from the literature on psychological safety and group decision making, we advance an integrated framework elaborating on the impact of psychological safety throughout a five-step process teams undergo to make decisions: (1) problem analysis, (2) goal setting, (3) identification of alternatives, (4) evaluation of alternatives, and (5) decision making. We then distill the findings from across the literature into a list of actionable and evidence-based recommendations for supporting effective team decision making in practice, as well as identifying areas to explore with future research to advance the science in meaningful ways. Overall, we contribute a novel perspective that psychological safety underpins the effective execution of all five steps of team decision making by enabling information exchange, goal commitment, productive conflict, and prevention of group decision-making biases (e.g., groupthink), leading to better team decisions.
