Cognitive styles and the role of middle managers
Rahmi Salviviani
Chapter 15 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 53-56 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Cognitive style represents the way individuals perceive and process information, shaping how middle managers (MMs) enact their roles and respond to organisational complexity. This entry examines how this style influences MMs’ four strategic roles (synthesising information, championing ideas, facilitating adaptability, and implementing deliberate strategy). It suggests how different styles determine how MMs interpret ambiguity, promote change, and align strategy with execution. Integrating cognitive style diversity helps organisations enhance role effectiveness, resilience, and communication within managerial hierarchies.
