Chapter 1 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 5-7 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder marked by unwarranted levels of inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity, which poses significant challenges for modern workplace environments. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD often show reduced productivity and higher rates of absenteeism and accidents, which may be related to poorer decision-making. As a result, those with ADHD are less likely to be considered for and/or enter managerial roles, due to their perceived lack of leadership qualities. Here, we provide a brief overview of the issues faced by individuals with ADHD in attaining managerial roles and make a case that those with ADHD can be effective leaders.
