Culture and decision-making

Silvio Aldrovandi

Chapter 19 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 66-68 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Culture shapes how individuals perceive information, evaluate options, and make decisions across psychological and organisational contexts. Differences in cultural dimensions (e.g., individualism–collectivism, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance) affect cognition and risk perception among many other processes. Research highlights that collectivist societies emphasise harmony and context, while individualist ones prioritise autonomy and analytical logic. Cultural tightness–looseness further determines tolerance for deviance and flexibility in decision processes. These distinctions influence leadership styles, group dynamics, and organisational culture within global settings. Understanding culture as a dynamic interpretive system enhances decision-making effectiveness, cross-cultural collaboration, and leadership in diverse organisational environments.
