Ethics and neuroscience

Dimitrios Koukourdinos

Chapter 29 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 101-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Advances in neuroscience have extended debates on ethical considerations beyond laboratories, emphasizing the brain's role in human behavior, decision-making, and social interactions. Neuroethics, at the intersection of neuroscience and ethics, explores both the ethical implications of neuroscience applications in business and how neural mechanisms underlie moral reasoning. In business contexts, it addresses ethical challenges related to neuroenhancement, neuromarketing, privacy, consent, and leadership development, highlighting risks of manipulation, inequality, and intrusion into autonomy. Simultaneously, the neuroscience of ethics illuminates how empathy, moral judgment, and prosocial behavior are shaped by neural processes. Neuroethics thus bridges empirical discovery and normative reflection, guiding responsible scientific and organizational practices.
