Social cognition and team collaboration

Chapter 67 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 238-240 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social cognition describes how people perceive, interpret, and react to information in social interactions and social contexts. Specifically, processes such as self-regulation, empathy, and perspective-taking enable individuals to navigate complex social environments, promoting social adaptation and group cohesion. Within organisational and management contexts, social cognition helps explain how individuals interpret social cues, work within teams, and develop shared understanding. It also highlights how empathy and social reasoning contribute to effective collaboration and leadership. Training leaders to be more attuned to the emotional and social well-being of their team members could contribute to more cohesive, adaptable, and resilient teams.
