Chapter 10 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 102-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The early 2000s saw significant public disquiet about emerging technologies such as GM crops. Engaging with the public – listening to their views, and involving them meaningfully in research – has become a policy priority. The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement was set up as part of the Beacons for Public Engagement programme, with the task of ‘changing the culture of research’, to ensure that researchers were equipped to work more openly and inclusively. This chapter traces the journey of the public engagement project: how can this kind of culture change be realised, and what lessons have been learned from the programme?
