Chapter 17 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 184-200 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the often-overlooked role of the university teaching mission in the engagement and impact agenda. We argue that focusing on external stakeholders in teaching is symbiotic, similar to the approach in research. By linking institutional commitment to Enterprise Pedagogy, we highlight how this approach fosters deep engagement and impact for external parties. Enterprise pedagogy emphasises experiential learning and often relies on external partners for co-creation. We introduce the concept of a ‘Continuum of External Engagement in Curriculum’ and a ‘Matrix of Engagement and Impact for External Stakeholders,’ providing a framework for coordinated institutional strategies. The chapter details how Oxford Brookes Business School has integrated Enterprise Pedagogy into its Education Strategy, enhancing external engagement and impact. We present a four-point ‘VUCA’ implementation plan – Vision, Unlock, Coordination, Advance – and share two vignettes of successful curriculum engagement activities, along with ‘Top Tips’ for scaling engagement and impact.
