Student engagement: what, why and how?

Dinusha Weerawardane

Chapter 18 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 201-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter will delve into the intricate tapestry of engagement within the context of higher education, specifically focusing on student engagement and its significance as a pivotal driver of academic success and institutional excellence. Viewing students as active partners in their educational journey, rather than passive recipients, would underpin the discussion. The multi-faceted nature and complexities of student engagement would be explained, with emphasis on the dynamic interplay of academic, behavioural, cognitive and psychological facets. Furthermore, the chapter will outline the influence of student expectations, including Gen Z's different outlook on education, career and work–life balance, and the potential evolution of student engagement throughout their educational journey. The author shares some best practices of using motivation as a tool for engagement, as well as creative approaches to stimulate engagement and active learning through the use of a diverse array of tried-and-tested platforms and digital tools. Lastly, the chapter also explores the challenges for student engagement stemming from the advancement of technology and emergence of artificial intelligence (AI).
