Chapter 20 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 220-233 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the experience of the Productivity Insights Network (PIN), a Network Plus, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) between 2017 and 2021. Led by professors Philip McCann (University of Manchester) and Tim Vorley (Oxford Brookes University), and project managed by Kate Penney (University of Manchester), the PIN was designed to develop high-impact academic insights. At a cost of £2.3 million, it was established to synthesise evidence and produce new insight on the complexities of the UK's productivity challenge for the attention of senior policy officials, civil servants, and ministers in Whitehall and Westminster. The chapter begins by framing the focus of PIN in terms of the productivity debate, before considering the membership and structure of the network, and then discusses the work programme and engagement activities. We finish with some broad reflections on our experience that may be of interest to others looking to build and scale engaged and impactful networks.
