Chapter 29 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 325-330 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this final chapter, we bring together the insights from the collection to understand how different perspectives have answered the principal question that inspired the book: how do we scale engagement and impact from universities? We identify three broad themes that support furthering our understanding. Firstly, there is the need to see engagement from a diverse perspective, shaping and scoping the meaning behind the terms so that it is meaningful but inclusive. Secondly, is being able to challenge the underlying paradigms and norms of academic life is a means of shifting the narrative and creating change. Finally, making changes in the culture, infrastructure and strategies of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is vital. We close by observing that, while much progress has been made, embedding engagement and impact into all of academic life will support engaged academics and HEI professionals to escalate their impact further.
