From ad hoc to expert: the professionalisation of knowledge exchange

Tamsin Mann

Chapter 4 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 33-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Over the past twenty or so years, UK universities have recruited a cohort of staff to facilitate so-called ‘third-stream’ activities that bring together academic researchers and external audiences on the local, national and international stage. This activity has been driven by national government policy and reflected in priorities by funding agencies. Today, this type of engagement is commonly described as ‘knowledge exchange’ (KE), and almost every university has some KE professional staff. Engagement is a key part of any KE professional's job, whether or not that is explicit in their job title or role, to raise awareness of research with the general public, to establish university–business relationships, or to secure investment for research translation. KE also requires internal engagement with academics and professional staff; the list of key dependencies is long and represents multiple faces of engagement. This chapter will discuss the growth of engagement activity in the context of the KE professional and in relation to innovation policy.
