Chapter 8 in Reimagining Teacher Digital Competence, 2025, pp 107-126 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Psychological digital competence is concerned with the psychological and emotional aspects of our online experiences and must include the ability to promote digital safety and well-being when using technology in an educational environment for teachers and students. The literature in this area is influenced by digital safety concerns related to cyberbullying, online harassment and too much screen time. Striking a balance between cognitive overload and teaching digital literacy to students is crucial. Digital competence in this realm, therefore, must be extended to include the impact of digital interactions on the mental health of teachers and their future students. We must understand the psychological risks and benefits of ‘being digital’ and ensure that policymakers, educators and students can operate in a safe and supportive online environment. This chapter will explain the concepts of digital well-being, digital addiction and psychological digital resilience, and introduce the concept of icon collapse. It also suggests digital well-being strategies for teachers and students.
