Teachers’ professional digital competence: the implications for academic integrity in the age of artificial intelligence

Chapter 9 in Reimagining Teacher Digital Competence, 2025, pp 127-140 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There has been heightened awareness and concern within the education community in relation to the preservation of ‘academic integrity’, and these concerns are prompted by developments relating to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Educators play a significant role in the preservation of academic integrity by virtue of the practices they adopt in respect to teaching, learning, research and assessment. In broader terms, educators also have a role in promoting responsible digital citizenship so that learners themselves acquire the competencies to navigate the complexities of the digital world and employ available tools in appropriate and responsible ways. This chapter addresses the role of the educator concerning attempts to preserve and maintain academic integrity and discusses how a reconceptualized notion of professional digital competence (PDC) may contribute or assist in this endeavour. It examines PDC through a lens of academic integrity and asks whether existing and reconceptualized ideas are sufficient to address this concern, and what gaps, if any, remain.
