Rethinking media: definitions, content, and platforms
Alan B. Albarran
Chapter 2 in Rethinking Media Economics, 2025, pp 15-27 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The media industries have undergone tremendous change over the past 50 years, moving from decades of stability to periods of continuing upheaval and chaos. This chapter examines how the term media has evolved over time; how consumption of media has changed due to evolving distribution technologies and formats; the changing consumer experience with media, and how audiences must constantly adapt to new ways of accessing media content. The chapter also looks at how audience members are now creating and producing their own content. Our conception of media content has changed over time from early forms (e.g., books, newspapers, magazines, broadcast radio and television, film, sound recordings) to digital content from Internet streaming services, social media, interactive gaming, and the emerging metaverse.
