Co-creating guiding principles for academic integrity AI policies by exploring equity in pedagogies

Abstract: This chapter reports on a process of co-creating ethical guidelines for artificial intelligence (AI) usage while maintaining pedagogical equity. The authors’ goal was to involve students as agents in exploring with educators ways to cultivate a culture in which students embrace integrity in academia and beyond, while raising awareness of the critical aspect of AI and equity. The process involved developing educators’ and students’ critical AI literacies, reimagining definitions of integrity in the context of generative AI (GenAI), and collaboratively crafting agile policies that foster equitable learning environments and academic integrity in a postplagiarism era. Such policies would help educators make compassionate pedagogical choices and cultivate classroom environments that redress inequities and potentially harmful practices that may result in students’ unauthorized use of GenAI. The American University in Cairo hosted the co-design workshop with a global audience, recognizing that agile principles must respond to differences across disciplines and local contexts.
