Chapter 4 in A Research Agenda for Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity, 2026, pp 39-60 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the integration of generative AI (GenAI) in academic research. It discusses transparency and the ethical obligation to disclose GenAI contributions, explores emerging risks (academic integrity breaches, authorship ambiguity, and intellectual property), and outlines strategies to preserve academic standards as well as promising approaches to responsible GenAI use in research. The chapter offers a set of practical, principle-driven guidelines aligned with COPE's core values: accountability, authority, collaboration, inclusivity, and integrity. Education emerges as a key enabler in fostering awareness and ethical AI use among researchers and students, contributing to a broader culture of integrity and innovation. The chapter draws on illustrative examples from different institutions to highlight how ethics in GenAI research is addressed in diverse policy and educational contexts. It concludes with a forward-looking research agenda, advocating for longitudinal studies on institutional ethical cultures, cross-sector collaboration, and the development of effective GenAI disclosure and detection strategies.
