Abstract: Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are the demonstrable skills, knowledge, and abilities students acquire in a class, distinguishing themselves from a teacher’s intentions (course objectives). These concise statements are valuable tools in community engaged learning for focusing assignments, communicating expectations, and especially for aligning class-specific learning with the goals of community partners and the university’s mission (like civic preparedness and career skills). When used creatively and linked to institutional frameworks, SLOs serve to justify and demonstrate the need and positive outcomes of high-impact experiential learning for stakeholders, including aiding in practitioners’ tenure and promotion.
