Chapter 2 in How to Facilitate Community-Engaged Learning, 2026, pp 5-13 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter offers a comprehensive glossary of significant terms including civic engagement, community outreach, academic service learning, and volunteerism, among others. It addresses the proliferation and confusion of community-engagement terminology that has emerged over the past two decades of remarkable growth in scholarship. The chapter introduces the Community Engagement Spectrum Framework, which organizes terms by their key differences in meaning and structure, beginning with community engagement as an umbrella concept encompassing specific types of engagement activities.
