Social identities and community-engaged learning
Judy Pryor-Ramirez
Chapter 5 in How to Facilitate Community-Engaged Learning, 2026, pp 46-56 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the critical role of social identities and their intersections within Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) contexts. The chapter is grounded in the author's experience teaching a CEL course, which sought to transform university–community relations from transaction to relationality. By introducing social identity formation as a layered process, the chapter underscores how attending to social identities can shape the CEL process, address systemic inequalities, and foster inclusive environments. Furthermore, the author draws on moments from her teaching and leadership to illustrate how generative tensions, or choques, arise when navigating differences, underscoring the importance of managing power dynamics and ensuring equitable communication to achieve equitable outcomes in relational work.
