Connecting the dots: Community engagement and the classroom

Bernadette Ludwig and Sonalini Sapra

Chapter 9 in How to Facilitate Community-Engaged Learning, 2026, pp 114-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of best practices for connecting community-engaged work with academic learning in the classroom to achieve desired outcomes for students while maintaining reciprocal and genuine partnerships with community organizations. Research has shown that community-engaged pedagogy can be transformative for students, contributing to skill development, personal growth, and civic engagement. However, effective pedagogy is central to achieving those impacts. The chapter addresses key questions around establishing meaningful connections between community work and course content, developing scaffolded assignments, and creating assessment strategies that capture learning outcomes. Common challenges of community-engaged pedagogy such as calendar misalignments and logistical barriers are also explored with practical solutions offered.
