Bridging sociology and medicine: preparing students for the MCAT and healthcare careers

Chapter 10 in Teaching Introduction to Sociology, 2026, pp 110-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as pre-med students are taking sociology courses to help them prepare for that exam. We explain the MCAT's foundational concepts that are often presented in social science classes, linking them with the essential concepts listed in the Sociological Literacy Framework (SLF), and provide examples of how we cover these concepts in our courses. Next, we outline three strategies for supporting pre-med students in sociology classes. Finally, we discuss how the influx of pre-med students in sociology courses can be leveraged to grow social science enrollment by adding a major, a certificate, or a combination BS/MS program related to a sociological approach to healthcare.
