Teaching sociology in Canada: making introductory courses relevant and accessible

Abstract: We are sociology faculty in Canada, and in this chapter, we describe our understanding of diversity and its importance in the undergraduate sociology classroom. We then offer a detailed discussion of the specific teaching strategies we use in large-enrollment courses of 150–400 students to make Introduction to Sociology relevant to undergraduate students in Canada. In our discussion, we acknowledge some of the institutional challenges that at times work to undermine our efforts to make Introduction to Sociology relevant to diverse students in Canada and discuss how we navigate these challenges.
