Designing introduction to sociology for one-and-done students: general education and beyond

Abstract: This chapter argues for a deliberate approach to teaching an Introduction to Sociology course to fulfill general education requirements or program specific requirements. Most students taking the introductory course will be non-majors. Guidance is provided on creating learning outcomes in an introductory course that serves the educational needs of these one-and-done students. Assessment strategies are discussed that can provide actionable data for general education functions. Highlighting these outcomes will assist with recruitment across campus. Being deliberate in design and execution will serve students’ needs with the potential to improve communities and society.
