Abstract:
The paper envisages illustrating how SMEs from Romania evolved in a 10 years time period, in the interval 2001 – 2011, from two perspectives: a) the first refers to how SMEs development took place, analysis based on the study of a number of indicators and b) the second refers to how the perceptions of SMEs changed in time. The first perspective is approached by studying the dynamics of Romanian SMEs development through the analysis of specific statistics for the period 20012009, focusing on the evolution of the SMEs structure according to their size, types of main activities and geographical regions in Romania, as well as the evolution of their turnover and other financial results. The objective is to characterize the dynamics of SMEs development and to identify trends in the evolution of SMEs in the analysed period. The second perspective is approached via the analysis of the results of a yearly organized nation-wide survey with SMEs. The objective is to analyse in a comparative manner how the perceptions of SME’s from Romania evolved in the period 2004-2011, focusing on aspects such as perceived business opportunities, business difficulties, effects of European Union integration and others. The paper will advance in the final section proposals for the sector’s policy development in order to create a friendlier business environment for SMEs in Romania.
