Chapter 10 in Flexibility and Stability in Working Life, 2007, pp 173-196 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Workers’ flexibility is important for economic development and growth. In modern capitalist countries, it happens all the time that some workplaces are closed down or are subject to downsizing, whereas others expand their workforce and new ones are established. All changes do not have to be positive for the economy as a whole, but a positive development requires change. This in turn means that workers must be prepared to make adjustments;thus, now and then, they are expected to switch jobs, work tasks or occupation, to commute, to move geographically, agree to working hours suited to business activities, make wage adjustments, and so on.
