Outsourcing Practice: The Search for Flexibility and Control

Chapter 1 in The Practice of Outsourcing, 2009, pp 3-34 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This book has an earlier companion volume in Information Systems and Outsourcing: Studies in Theory and Practice (Palgrave, 2009). There we gathered together our major papers and subsequent reflections on two themes: the theoretical perspectives utilized for studying outsourcing; and the learning that has emerged from our research, cast in the form of lessons for practice. In the present book we take the journey further, looking to give insight into the evolution of our research, and of outsourcing practices themselves, as they have developed from 1988 through to the present day. Here we build from a primary concern with Information Technology (ITO) through to the burgeoning market for business process services (BPO), and the moves to offshore, nearshore and hybrid models typical of the late 2000s.
