Production Strategies of European Firms: Between Retrenchment and Expansion Opportunities

Corrado Molteni

Chapter 6 in Corporate Strategies for South East Asia after the Crisis, 2000, pp 100-119 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract How does the crisis in Southeast Asia affect the strategies and the operations of European manufacturers in the region? Are they retreating, restructuring or in other ways revising their regional production plans? Or are they aggressively expanding thanks to the opportunities generated by falling asset prices and exchange rates, and the weakness of local competitors and partners? Is it possible to identify different patterns reflecting the characteristics of the sectors, the strategies pursued in the past, and the countries where companies operate? And how do the European firms’ strategic responses compare to those of their Japanese competitors?
