Abstract: Abstract Goal of the chapter: This chapter introduces a ‘theory of social businesses’. The main question is: What is the societal function of social businesses? After reading this chapter, the reader understands the following theses: current literature defines social businesses as challenged by ‘dual bottom lines’, social businesses are tightly coupled to markets and civil societies, they support communal solidarity and they allocate resources to meet social needs.
