The Origin of Tensions
Urs P. Jäger
Chapter 4 in Managing Social Businesses, 2010, pp 67-83 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Goal of the chapter: During the last 20 to 25 years nonprofits have become more and more professionalized. This trend is in line with nonprofits being challenged by a market environment that leads to basic management changes. This chapter follows up on the questions: What is the impact of the market environment on the professionalization of nonprofits? How does this trend affect governance, strategy and accountability? In this chapter the reader learns about the characteristics of the trend towards professionalization in civil societies, the effect of this trend on management and the emerging phenomenon of the ‘fund value’.
