Taking Action in a Hostile Environment
Beverley Stone
Chapter 4 in Confronting Company Politics, 1997, pp 32-46 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 3 ended with the quote from Howard Figler: ‘Risk is the tariff for leaving the land of predictable misery’. Traditionally, organisation development and culture change programmes have used the humanistic approach in the attempt to rectify the ‘predictable misery’ in organisations by creating a safe and supportive environment. They neglect to emphasise the ‘risk’. Existentialists, on the other hand, have a less optimistic view stressing as they do the difficulty of accepting and exercising the freedom to act in circumstances where the outcome is uncertain.
