Abstract:
Abstract Europe has created a new reality over the past half-century. Today, we see the emergence of a more united Europe, which began with the Common Market, through to the EU and now the issuance of the euro currency. Of course, the real changes wrought by the unification of Europe are only beginning to emerge. Regional cultures have taken on greater importance for the typical citizen, even while national cultures become blurred with pan-European urges. For example, Wallonia and Flanders drift towards more autonomy within the Belgian state; Scotland seeks and wins support for more autonomy and external recognition from the UK; and Catalonia places a renewed stamp of its independent thinking on the Iberian Peninsula.
