Abstract Not since the advent of the PC has any technical development attracted so much widespread attention as the Internet. The Internet has gone from being a communications tool, used by a small sector of society, to something that has permeated much of the corporate and consumer world. During this period of phenomenal growth the volume of traffic carried has grown exponentially.
