Conclusion: Economic Sociology and the Political Economy of China’s Agro-food Markets

Abstract: Abstract A few years ago Fligstein and Zhang (2009, p. 41) rightly observed that research on China’s evolving political economy had so far for the most part ignored theoretical lessons offered by the literature on economic sociology. The studies of China’s various agro-food markets collected in this volume are one step towards addressing this apparent gap in the literature. Though not uniform in their theoretical perspectives they address multiple aspects of crucial importance in understanding the Chinese experience of economic development — all the while engaging concepts proposed by scholars of economic sociology not least by Fligstein himself. This concluding chapter will summarize their findings. More specifically the theoretical contributions of this essay collection will be discussed, highlighting the following aspects: the role of the state, social and political embeddedness, central-local relations, quality and regulation, as well as instituted relationships in China’s agro-food markets. The following sections address each of these topics and selectively draw on the findings of previous chapters without repeating all that has been said. Thus we hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of China’s emerging political economy.
