Abstract: Abstract Hunan is a province of the PRC. It is located to the south of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and south of Lake Dongting. Its name means “south of the lake”. The province borders Hubei Province to the north, Jiangxi Province to the east, Guangdong Province to the south, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the southwest, Guizhou Province to the west and Chongqing Municipality to the northwest. It is sometimes called and officially abbreviated to “Xiang”, after the Xiang River, which runs through the area.
