Abstract In writing a book on any topic, it is always important to understand its history. What were the challenges and developments of the past that catapulted data mining to the forefront of business today? To get a sense of data mining’s history, it is useful to speak to its early practitioners, namely, the direct marketers of the large major catalogue companies and publishing houses.
