Chapter 10 in Fairness in the Workplace, 2015, pp 191-215 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Culture plays an important role in understanding organizational fairness. Clearly, organizational fairness has different meanings in different cultures and for different ethnic groups. Motives of social exchange are likely to have indirect effects on responses to violations of cultural codes, because cultural values specify preferences for particular end states or modes of behavior. In agreement with the evidence about the role of cultural differences in decision-making processes and choice of behavior, they suggested that, depending on their cultural background, the preferences of individuals for situational characteristics related to their exchange relationship with their employer would vary. Thus, cultural differences moderate the effect of specific situational characteristics, such as the presence of high-quality job alternatives, on behavior (Thomas, Au, & Ravlin, 2003).
