Abstract: Abstract A special purpose of the symposium had been to assemble economists and economic geographers to compare approaches to the analysis of the international allocation of economic activity. This session took advantage of the opportunity for the two disciplines to develop an ‘informal communications network and to gain from trade’, as Max Corden put it. The first issue discussed was whether location theory and trade theory tried to solve the same set of problems with different approaches or addressed different problems. Both views were advanced. The papers by Allan Pred and Walter Isard, as well as the Comments upon them, explored the cumulative nature of economic agglomerations and the consequent advantages of being a first comer. The discussants scrutinised the relevance of these concepts for the subject of the symposium. This session was chaired by Lawrence R. Klein.
