Conclusion The Transformation of Employee Relations in the Automobile Industry?

Jean-Pierre Durand, Paul Stewart and Juan José Castillo

A chapter in Teamwork in the Automobile Industry, 1999, pp 412-445 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In the Introduction, Durand identified the general configuration of work organisation in the sector (Table 2 — ‘The four canonical models of work organisation’). He then distinguished three corresponding ideal typical forms of employee relations (Fordist, Japanese-lean production, Kalmarian), arguing that they are models in the double sense of the terms. Firstly, their systemic coherence allows us to make sense of particular situations at a particular moment. Secondly, they can be copied, imitated and reproduced by various actors who see in them the answer or answers to their problems.
