Abstract: Abstract When, in January 1985, the Saturn project was launched, it was done with all the hype and publicity that such a huge venture deserved. Estimated at the time at $5 billion (later to be scaled down to $3.5 billion), it was the largest private enterprise ever started in the United States and probably in the world. In that grey and cold morning of January 1985 in Detroit, when Roger Smith broke the news and announced the launching of the Saturn project, it was supposed to be the ray of sunshine that would warm up the spirits of General Motors, be the promise of a new Spring that would see the giant rise from the ashes.
