Running Assembly Lines: Smiths Industries

T. A. J. Nicholson

Chapter 7 in Managing Manufacturing Operations: A Casebook, 1978, pp 83-100 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Smiths Industries is a major manufacturer of instrumentation in the United Kingdom. Their instruments are closely related to transportation, going into motor vehicles, locomotives, aerospace and shipping. Although the company has created new divisions for diversification into clocks, watches and more recently into distribution in order to sell directly to the public, the main field for manufacture and marketing continues to be vehicle instrumentation.
