Chapter 5 in Retailing Management, 1994, pp 63-75 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Cash and profit are two of the main concerns of the business. They are both important but they are different. Cash is an asset of the business which can be used to purchase goods or services. Profit is the surplus resulting from a period of trading, having deducted all business expenses from sales revenue. Profit is an accounting measurement not an asset owned by a business.
