Abstract:
Abstract The goal of this chapter is to provide county fair managers and administrators with the ability to conduct their own economic impact studies for their county fairs. The authors provide the methodology, instruments, as well as some specific results from five county fairs where this process was successfully applied. In order to implement this “toolbox,” or the methods and steps to collecting consumer spending and demographic data, a county fair director must first develop a survey and obtain a volunteer force to administer the survey. It is critical to train the volunteer force on how to give out the survey and attract fairgoers. Once these data are collected, an input–output analysis can be used to calculate the direct, indirect, and induced effects of conducting a county fair. While this paper presents results of studies conducted in counties located in the state of Wisconsin, USA, the methodology and toolbox employed in these studies are transferable nationally and globally.
