Abstract: Abstract The fall of the totalitarian regime in Albania started a large wave of governance reforms, including the territorial planning sector. This chapter aims at analysing the major transition in the planning system from a regulatory/urbanistic approach towards a more spatial approach through the looking glass of Europeanisation as one of the main drivers behind the changes. Therefore, it becomes interesting to open a debate regarding the extent to which the process of Europeanisation has affected the planning system as well as to understand the limitations and the possibilities behind the process. Following a theoretical discussion regarding the Europeanisation of spatial planning systems, the chapter delves into the analysis of the Albanian case. By analysing the main changes of the planning system, the chapter will afterwards focus on a content analysis of the General National Territorial Plan (GNTP). The case of the GNTP is quite interesting considering that this instrument is at the top of the hierarchy in planning in Albania; thus, it is expected that the impacts of the European integration processes, and the larger debate on Europeanisation, are manifested in this document.
