Chapter Chapter 3 in Cultural Heritage and Territorial Identity, 2022, pp 65-85 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter investigates the impact that the relationship between cultural heritage and tourism attractiveness has on local economic development. By performing a conjoint analysis of cultural heritage, tourism attractiveness and economic development (through a structural equation model methodology) it has been possible to overcome the fragmented approach proposed by the literature so far. More specifically, the results of the analysis support the logic according to which cultural heritage attracts tourists and, in turn, this increased tourism demand positively affects local economies. Therefore, cultural heritage plays its role in local economic development indirectly through the tourism demand channel which mediates the relationship between the endowment of heritage and local economic growth. Overall, being the scope of the analysis the European Union regions, it is possible to generalize the results and therefore identifying a functioning mechanism.
