Abstract: Abstract This chapter summarizes the ways in which mobility has been and will be affected by technological change over a relatively long period from the late 1800s to 2050 and the implications of this for research in regional science. The review covers the period from the Industrial Revolution to the mid-2000s. Out of necessity the scope will be broad, encyclopedic and somewhat general. The extrapolation of how mobility will be affected by technological change in the first half of the twenty-first century will be the primary and concluding focus of the analysis.
