Abstract: Abstract Modelling dynamic systems has in the past decades become an integral part of the analysis of complex behaviour of evolutionary phenomena. After a period of linear dynamics, we have in the 1990s observed an avalanche of interest in non-linear dynamic systems, as witnessed inter alia in catastrophe theory, chaos theory, synergetics and learning theory. These advances have demonstrated that modelling such systems calls for a variety of approaches (see e.g. Nijkamp and Reggiani, 1998).
