Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore whether being located in a city has some effects on firms’ innovation activity, and whether it has an effect on firms’ collaboration for the purpose of innovation. The focus is especially on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs2) in the manufacturing industry. The paper empirically tests three hypotheses related to proximity and innovation. Firstly, do urbanisation economies have an effect on the extent of firms’ innovation activity in the Oslo region?3 Secondly, does city location have an effect on firms’ use of external actors in the innovation process? Thirdly, does proximity to important tacit-knowledge providers (like the scientific community) enhance the use of formal innovation collaboration with these actors?
