Chapter Chapter 14 in Complexity and Spatial Networks, 2009, pp 187-207 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Complexity does not mean complicated (Nijkamp 2007; Waldrop 1992, pp. 11–12). Confusion arises since complexity is a word in common use but in science it has a special meaning (O’Sullivan 2004). The first part of this chapter will consider the various definitions of complexity that have appeared in the literature. The second part will discuss a case study of the deregulation of the Alberta, Canada, electrical power generation industry, illustrating the dynamics of a complex system.
